Strongsville veterinarian fights fleas.jpgFeline and canine allergic dermatitis can be an issue for pet owners even in the winter months. Not only are these parasites an itchy nuisance, but they can lead to a variety of pet health issues. At Crossroads Animal Hospital in Strongsville, just south of Cleveland, we believe that flea prevention is a necessary part of any pet wellness care regimen.

The best way to deal with fleas is to keep them from gaining a well-established foot-hold in your home. Once you start seeing fleas, it is likely your pet and household are already heavily infested. Topical medications, such as Frontline, are largely successful at preventing fleas and in killing any existing fleas. These medications are applied once a month to your cat or dog and stay in the pet’s skin and hair to kill the flea when it comes into contact with the topical product. They also act on flea eggs, preventing them from hatching.

Flea Prevention as Part of Pet Wellness Care

Preventing fleas from setting up housekeeping in your pet's coat is a necessary part of any pet health care routine. Left untreated, fleas can lead to anemia, feline and canine dermatitis and tapeworms from ingesting fleas when the pet grooms itself. Our animal hospital carries flea medications for cats and for dogs. Holistic and natural substances such as garlic do not work for preventing or combating fleas. We can advise you on how best to deal with a flea infestation and prevent it from reoccurring.

Do you make flea prevention a part of your regular pet wellness care routine? What do you do to prevent fleas from pestering your animals? Do you seek advice from a veterinarian on flea prevention? We invite you to share your experiences with our readers by leaving a comment below.
