The basic process of laser surgery involves a trained veterinarian targeting a highly concentrated infrared beam upon the wound area or site of intended incision. This beam instantly ablates the soft tissue it has been targeted upon. One of the biggest benefits of this method is that it simultaneously seals capillaries, small blood vessels, lymphatics and nerve endings, which greatly reduces pain. This also leads to far less blood loss and a more sterile wound, which can minimize the risk of infection. Traditional scalpel methods do not include this benefit, causing a greater length of healing time for the pet.

While these surgeries are not performed to pose an immediate health benefit, they are necessary in certain situations. The use of the laser allows greater healing time and less blood loss than other methods used in the past.
