Strongsville Pet Laser Surgery
at Crossroads Animal Hospital

One of the main benefits for Strongsville animal owners to partner with Crossroads Animal Hospital for pet wellness care is our availability to perform pet laser surgery. This innovative technique is designed to eliminate the need for steel-blade scalpels in tissue removal, which increases healing time for the animal. In addition, pet laser surgery also helps allow procedures that were previously long and complicated to become much less invasive.

The basic process of laser surgery involves a trained veterinarian targeting a highly concentrated infrared beam upon the wound area or site of intended incision. This beam instantly ablates the soft tissue it has been targeted upon. One of the biggest benefits of this method is that it simultaneously seals capillaries, small blood vessels, lymphatics and nerve endings, which greatly reduces pain. This also leads to far less blood loss and a more sterile wound, which can minimize the risk of infection. Traditional scalpel methods do not include this benefit, causing a greater length of healing time for the pet.

What Types of Procedures Include
Pet Laser Surgery?

Most Strongsville owners are surprised at the types of pet wellness care procedures that involve laser surgery. While this list changes frequently as new methods are discovered, the following are the most common performed by veterinarians in our clinic:

Accident Related Injuries and Wounds:

Our veterinarians are having great success treating accident related injuries through laser surgery. This includes amputations, wound cauterization, dramatic wound closure, etc.

Spay/Neuter/Sterilization Procedures:

Many reproductive sterilization procedures (i.e. spay and neuter) now involve a laser technique for incision. Again, this process allows the wound to heal faster.

Tumor or Mass Removal:

The discovery of tumors and/or non-cancerous masses by veterinarians during pet wellness care visits for older animals has become quite common. Where removal of these tissues was previously quite invasive, the use of a laser allows the procedure to be much less traumatic on the health of the pet.

Ophthalmology Surgeries:

Many pets tend to develop masses on their eyelids or have other conditions that require laser surgery to the eye area. Laser makes this a much better surgery for your pet.

Optional Surgeries:

Laser surgery has also become quite common for optional surgeries, such as voice box removal and dewclaw removal. While these surgeries are not performed to pose an immediate health benefit, they are necessary in certain situations. The use of the laser allows greater healing time and less blood loss than other methods used in the past.

It is also important to realize that laser surgery is not a feature that all area veterinary clinics posses nor is it used in all health related cases. Strongsville pet owners with questions about laser surgery or pet wellness care are invited to call our animal hospital at (440) 783-8546.
