The question that we get the most from pet owners is what types of dental services are available? At our animal hospital, we provide general dental checkups and professional cleanings, as well as more advanced procedures like pet oral surgeries and dental emergency extractions. Our office also offers digital x-rays for pets, enabling our veterinarians to quickly and effectively diagnose any oral diseases or conditions. Digital x-rays are essential to equipping our staff with a look under the surface so that our treatment or surgical procedures are focused on resolving the pet’s dental condition.

Common Pet Dental Procedures and Ailments

The most common dental problems seen by our Strongsville veterinarians include tartar problems, decay problems and impacted teeth. Other ailments often include broken, chipped or cracked teeth due to gnawing on overly hard items and/or accidents.

We do suggest that each pet undergo a routine dental checkup and cleaning in addition to their annual pet wellness care exam. This usually includes the inspection of the teeth and gums to determine if there is any sort of abnormality or problem. If needed, the inspection and cleaning can be done with or without pet anesthesia, depending on the size and temperament of the animal.

Most puppies and kittens should also have their teeth examined around eight to ten weeks of age, usually during their routine pet wellness care and vaccination appointment. A checkup of this type allows our staff to determine that each of the animal’s teeth are growing in the right location and are not impacted in any way. Impacted or abnormally growing teeth do not just cause a discomfort issue for the animal. They could also cause major health problems and expensive surgeries later in life.

Unfortunately, most owners inadvertently diminish their cat or dog’s health by forgetting dentistry as part of their pet wellness care routine. When left untreated, this often leads to much larger health issues.

One extremely serious dental condition in dogs and cats often seen at our clinic is called Stomatitis. With this condition, the animal’s immune system overreacts to the tartar buildup in the pet’s mouth. This causes the body to begin to shed its teeth preventing the animal from consuming food and water. Lack of consumption can then lead to malnutrition and even death. Stomatitis, if caught in time, can be treated by a veterinarian to prevent the disease from spreading.

All pet owners should take notice if their animal begins to refuse food or water. In addition, any blistering or bleeding of the mouth and/or gums should be immediately reported to a veterinarian. This, combined with any growths in the cat or dog's mouth, can signal a potentially deadly problem and infection and should be reviewed as soon as possible.
